When is an AI system justified in making a claim about the state of a collective?

My research examines when evidence distributed across interaction, relationships, and time warrants an inference about a latent condition of a bounded collective—and what is required for that inference to be theoretically valid, empirically supported, appropriately composed across levels, and represented with uncertainty.

Research agenda

Collective-State Inference

The program develops a computational organization theory of collective-state estimation together with the operational and empirical foundations required for defensible use.

01

Theoretical foundation

Specifies the conditions under which an AI output may legitimately be interpreted as a latent condition of a bounded collective, including explicit collective boundaries, collective-level constructs, composition logic, temporal and contextual alignment, uncertainty, and validation against collective-level criteria and simpler comparison models.

Research manuscript · In peer review. Collective-State Inference: A Computational Organization Theory for Collective-Aware Artificial Intelligence is unpublished and currently in external journal peer review following editorial suitability assessment. Peer review is ongoing, the manuscript has not been accepted, and CSI has not yet been empirically validated. The manuscript does not claim that collective states have never been computational targets; its contribution is a general, level-aware theory specifying when collective-state interpretation is warranted.

02

Operationalization

Specifies how latent collective conditions can be represented through construct definitions, alternative composition models, evidence windows, indicators, labels, baselines, and candidate inference procedures. CSI does not reject aggregation; the appropriate composition model depends on the construct and empirical evidence.

03

Design and validation

Defines the empirical design used to compare aggregate, relational, and candidate collective-state representations and test construct validity, calibration, incremental explanatory value, and the conditions under which richer interaction evidence adds value beyond simpler baselines.
